Prof.S. Kumaran is currently a Professor of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli. He is having a long association with the Institute as a regular faculty since 2000. Prior to joining the Institute, he had been working with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bangalore as a Project Engineer. He had been conferred Ph.D for his research on Powder processing of Titanium aluminides from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli. He has completed both his Post graduation and Bachelor graduation from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. He is the recipient of DST fast track research project award. He has received DST-Boycast fellowship for his Post-Doctoral Research under the mentoring of Prof. C. Suriyanarayana at University of Central Florida, USA. Later, he was a visiting scientist MRISUS, AIST Nagoya, Japan; Centre for Innovative Sintered Product, Pennstate University, Park, PA, USA and Surface Engineering Laboratory, Stony Brooke University, USA.
The current research includes advanced processing and structural-property correlation of Hydrogen storage materials, Thermoelectric materials, Biodegradable alloys, Magnesium alloys, Oxide dispersed strengthened alloys and advanced materials joining etc. Many sponsored projects by the various public funding agencies such as MHRD, ISRO, DST, SERB, MNRE, ARDB, CSIR, DRDO etc., for the net tune of 10 crores were received and few more sponsored research projects are under progress.
