All the hostels and few institute buildings are connected with high speed internet through the Fiber To The Home (FTTH) infrastructure. Each student room in hostel have a WiFi enabled GPON ONT device which is connected though a fiber distribution network with the GPON OLT at the data centre. The FTTH network in the hostel zone has a peak traffic of around 7 Gbps. A total of around 4200 GPON ONT's are installed in NIT Tiruchirappalli.
The major advantages of the FTTH network are faster upload and download speeds, highly scalable network, low latency, high reliability. The technology upgrades can be done without replacing the optical fiber distribution network.
The FTTH network is centrally monitored through Network monitoring system. The maintenance team routinely monitor the traffic flow, alarms, threshold values etc and they are equipped with tools/devices like OTDR, splicing machine.
