Dr. Mallikarjuna currently serves as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Production Engineering, National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NITT), Tamil Nadu, India.
My Journey in Additive Manufacturing: From Prototyping to Pioneering Research
My passion for Additive Manufacturing (AM) began over a decade ago, starting with my academic studies and evolving into a dedicated career in research, development, and education. This path has allowed me to contribute significantly to the advancement of AM technologies in India.
My introduction to AM came during my B.Tech in 2010, exploring rapid prototyping for agile manufacturing. This initial interest deepened during my M.Tech, where I completed a comprehensive course and undertook a project at the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), Bengaluru. The project, "Innovative Modeling and Reverse Engineering of a Turbocharger Impeller," provided hands-on experience with laser scanning, stereolithography (SLA) prototyping, and structural analysis.
Following my M.Tech, I joined Cycloid Systems Pvt. Ltd. as an Application Engineer. There, I was deeply involved in the end-to-end design and development of FDM-based 3D printers, strengthening my expertise in CAD, machine building, electronics, and prototype fabrication.
In 2014, I commenced my Ph.D. at NIT Surathkal under the guidance of Dr. Srikanth Bontha and Prof. Prasad Krishna, a pioneer in AM process modelling. My doctoral research focused on the computational modelling and experimental investigation of Directed Energy Deposition (DED) processes for TiAl alloys. A key achievement of this work was the successful prediction and experimental validation of residual stresses in TiAl DED builds one of the pioneering contributions to the field both in India and internationally. This research encompassed extensive microstructural characterization, X-ray diffraction, and mechanical property evaluation.
In 2019, I joined Amrita University as an Assistant Professor, continuing my AM research with a focus on developing low-cost TiAl powder production methods, leading to publications in reputed journals.
Since 2022, I have been an Assistant Professor at NIT Tiruchirappalli, where my research has expanded to include large-scale AM systems. A highlight of this work has been leading the design and development of a concrete 3D printer. This innovation was honored with the Best Innovation in Manufacturing Practices Award at NIT Warangal in 2024. Furthermore, my team's recent work on extrusion-based TPU composite materials earned the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Additive Manufacturing in 2025.
A Holistic Approach to AM Advancement
My career is defined by a unique synergy of computational modelling, experimental research, materials science, and hands-on machine design. I am committed to pushing the frontiers of additive manufacturing through innovative research, mentoring the next generation of engineers, and contributing to the growth of this transformative technology.
