M. Tech. (Non Destructive Testing)

As Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) plays a vital role in ensuring the quality and reliability of industrial products, there is a constant demand for qualified NDT professionals in industries.

To meet this industrial demand, the Department offers M.Tech. (NDT) programme which is structured as in the Brunel University, UK. In this programme, students are taught with necessary theoretical inputs as well as with practical training in collaboration with NDT Lab and Welding Research Institute (WRI) of Bharath Heavy Electricals (BHEL), Tiruchirappalli (www.bheltry-spares.com). In this four semester programme, the first two semesters are designed for theory, practicals and field work. The third and fourth semesters are exclusively meant for carrying out project work in industries and various research institutions in the country like IISc, IGCAR, WRI , BHEL, HAL etc.

This programme is indeed a testimony for the interaction between Industry and Educational Institution. NITT enjoys the pride of offering this unique postgraduate programme in whole of the country for nearly two decades. M.Tech (NDT) programme has been accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for 5 years from 2008.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

PEO1

To prepare the graduates with a strong foundation in basic science, engineering and technology so as to become effective innovators and entrepreneurs in addressing engineering challenges in the field of non-destructive testing.

PEO2

To prepare the graduates to work in an interdisciplinary background and contribute significantly for quality research and reliability for human safety.

PEO3

To develop the graduates with strong industrial training, practical knowledge, interpersonal skills with integrity and ethical values so that they become a successful professional and responsible NDT engineers for the society.

Programme Outcomes (POs)

PO1

Obtain in-depth knowledge and hands on experience in conventional and advanced techniques in the field of non-destructive testing at the national and global levels.

PO2

Investigate and find solutions for complex engineering components and structures using theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in NDT.

PO3

Formulate inspection procedures for detection, evaluation and analysis of defects in engineering components to meet the need of quality through codes and standards for public safety and human life.

PO4

Carry out independent research work for current NDT problems related to industry through literature survey, problem design and perform experiments.

PO5

Create, select, learn and apply appropriate techniques in NDT and modelling (ABAQUS COMSOL and Lab VIEW) to predict defects in various complex engineering components and structures.

PO6

Ability to work in the interdisciplinary research areas in science/engineering and get exposed to industrial environment, research organization and industrial consultancy.

PO7

Understand the management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and a team leader to manage various NDT projects and professionals.

PO8

Communicate effectively the activities like testing, reports, documentations and presentations adhering to codes and standards to the NDT community.

PO9

Interaction with professionals and participation in technical meetings periodically by appreciating the modern technological changes and engage in life-long learning.

PO10

Apply NDE standards and follow the professional ethics to become responsible engineers for a quality and safe life.

PO11

Examine critically the outcomes of the work done independently and learn from the mistakes without any external means.
