Marketing Conclave

On Jan21-22 DoMS hosted the 1st Marketing Conclave - mPULSE'12.

mPulse was envisaged to bring the knowledge of the eminent speakers in the marketing world to the budding managers. The event aims to demystify the academic lessons of the legends like Peter Drucker and  Michael Porter and sense the pulse of the industry from the leaders. The conclave brings the marketing pulse of the different fields of marketing, delivered by eminent personalities.

The conclave will open new roads for the future managers to explore treasure troves in the field of marketing. The conclave will also lease a continuous lifeline to reinforce the relationship with the industry. The Event will be an impulse to knowledge of the participants and to enable them to learn and unlearn the basic and complex aspects of marketing.

Workshop On Business Analytics And IT Consulting

On January 8th & 9th 2011 the department hosted a workshop that is not common in many B schools, the workshop on Advanced Business Analytics & IT Consulting. This is in sequence with proceedings and the academic initiatives taken during a workshop held on August 29, 2009 where the foundation for a new specialization in Business Analysis & IT Consulting was laid.

The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Zaasti Corporation, USA. Mr. Thothathri Visvanathan, Vice President & Delivery Head, Infosys, Chennai inaugurated the workshop with his introductory speech on latest business scenario in IT Consulting. He explained in detail the importance of learning business analysis and its importance to the Consulting Professionals.

Mr. Peter Johnson – A Certified Business Analysis Professional™ from International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), USA was the key resource person. As an Independent Consultant serving for Zaasti Corp, Mr. Peter has over 20 years of experience in Information Services as a Consultant and Trainer. During the workshop, students got an edge in Business Analysis field through learning and interacting on how to get a job done by demonstrating excellent critical thinking and analytical skills in the Requirements Analysis and Elicitation Knowledge areas. The training was a great value addition for those entering into Business Analysis & IT Consulting profiles of various organizations. It also helped students better understand the class room concepts of the new specialization and relate to real business situations.

Emerging Trends In Supply Chain And Changing Business Environment

The National workshop on "Emerging Trends in Supply Chain and Changing Business Environment" was conducted on January 22nd and 23rd by the Department Of Management Studies, National Institute of Technology. The 2 day workshop presented the technological breakthroughs and ideas in supply chain management in various perspectives followed with live case studies. The speakers covered all verticals and horizontals of SCM and its relation with other aspects of business.

The first session was on "Supply Chain Improvement" by Mr. A. L. Vasudevan, GM, Training & development, Lucas TVS Limited- Chennai. His talk gave the participants practical insights of change programmes and also included "accumulated learnings" that are not taught in any engineering colleges or business schools in an interactive mode.

The topic of second session "Taxation Issues in Supply Chain Management" does sound heavy but was handled amazingly by Mr. Prasanna Krishnan.V, Partner of DPV & Associates – Chennai

The second day of the workshop was an informative package of four sessions. The day started with a session on "Issues on Logistics as a complete Advantage" explained by Mr. Gangadhar Rout, Head Logistic solution – SCM, Essar Steel Business Group – Mumbai. The most interactive session was delivered by Mr. Rony Das, SC, Research and Consulting strategy Projects Lead, HP – Bangalore on "Supply Chain Analytics" where the speaker divided the group into different groups and asked them to discuss a case on plant location. The post lunch session started with the lecture of Mr. T. K. Bharath, MD, Thought Process Logistics Management Consulting Services, Bangalore on the topic "Issues on Logistics as a complete Advantage". The final session of the workshop was on "Material Requirements Planning" by Mr. Mohan, AGM, ERP, BHEL- Trichy.

Business Analytics And Intelligence

The two day workshop conducted during 5th and 6th of December 2009 on Business Analytics and Intelligencewas a grand success. The session started with a welcome speech by our former HOD, Dr. M. Punniyamoorthy and a presidential address by our beloved formere Director, Dr. M. Chidambaram who emphasized the importance of quick learning for better industrial exposure. Professor Dr. G. Kannabiran gave the key note address to welcome all the dignitaries and delegates from various industries and institutes.

  • Mr. Derick Jose, GM, Mindtree started the session with focus on the application of analytics in real business problems like market analysis. He threw light over the supply chain model, primary and secondary sale, market forecasting and behavior, engagement methodologies and deliverables in order to explain sales behavior.

  • Mr. N. Raman, Cognizant mentioned about various trends in the corporate world and explained how BI and analytics can be applied in the functional domain with a retail banking-credit card case.

  • Mr. Ramesh Kumar, Symphony Services gave an insight on the use of analytics in the retail sector and described on information gathering from unstructured data with the product barcode.

  • Mr. Uday Bhaskar, Genpact discussed about the areas of time series forecasting, risk analytics, credit card company’s authorization strategy and application of customer behavioral pattern in understanding the business with a case on customer service analytics.

  • Mr. Saurabh Jain from Mindtree spoke about various tools like dashboards, score cards and interactive statistical models used in analytics. He also gave an insight on ROI with the use of dashboards.

  • Mr. Das Rony of HP analytics discussed on DSS and analysis services and explained the application of analytics in SCM where he emphasized RFID analytics and risk management for handling inventory.

  • Mr. V. M. Govindarajan, Infosys gave an insight on how CIOs at Infosys see the trends, handle the challenges of consolidating master data and performance management to increase the business value of the enterprise with a case on enterprise reporting.

  • Mr. Kumaran (DoMS alumni, 2003 - 05 batch), AOL elucidated how BA and BI can be used in online marketing field. He discussed about the online industry portals, search engine, e-commerce, paid services, classified and social areas.

The workshop came to an end with feedback from delegates who thought it to be an informative and wonderful session. Industrial participants from BHEL were very much elated that they wanted to apply the knowledge gained here in their departments.
